An EAP Resource The Search Institute One of the more common EAP referral reasons comes from parents who are concerned about their child or adolescent’s development and possible roadblocks to successful transition to young adult life. EAP providers may find The Search Institute website to be a helpful tool to use in a counseling session or for parents to use at home. The Search Institute is an independent, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization devoted to creating healthy communities for our young people. The website is interactive and provides information and resources for parents and families to succeed. For example under the tab What Kids Need, developmental assets such as positive family communication, service to others, responsibility, and healthy lifestyles are discussed in detail. Forty developmental assets are listed and explained for children and for adolescents. Another kid’s need section discusses research on spiritual development in children. The research is presented objectively and separates spirituality from religion. The Search Institute also emphasizes community engagement by parents and families and the importance of community in child development. The Search Institute has an email newsletter that parent’s and EAP providers can subscribe to and a down load file of handouts and information sheets. A video center includes downloadable videos highlighting ideas and principles of the Institute. This website could be a valuable resource for EAP providers working with parents and families. The Search Institute uses a positivist psychology model focusing on strengths which may be an added benefit for EAP providers. The website address for The Search Institute is www.search-institute.org. Columbia River EAPA does not endorse or support The Search Institute and makes the information available to EAP providers for their own evaluation and use. Peter Barbur, LPC, MPH CREAPA President
